StriQ

A knitted exploration of analog and digital realms
COURSE DIGITAL MEDIA | PROF. DR. CHRISTINE GOUTRIÉ | SS 2025

Developed in the advanced course “Digital Media II” with Christine Goutrié, StriQ explores the translation of digital systems into physical form through semi-automated knitting.

Digital codes & analog stitches |

This project aims to transfer a purely digital symbol, the QR code, into the analog world using a hacked knitting machine. By transforming a machine-readable code into a textile object, the project investigates whether digital information remains readable once materialized through yarn, structure, and irregularity. It examines the tension between digital precision and material imperfection, questioning where functionality ends and a new visual or tactile language begins.

The images document the knitted results produced during the project. They show how the QR code pattern manifests as a textile surface, where material properties and machine behavior introduce shifts in clarity, rhythm, and structure. These variations influence the code’s readability and transform it into a visual and tactile object.
